FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

WHAT DOES MY EMPLOYEE GET FROM THIS EXPERIENCE?

Past participants in the program have reported that they have:

• Gained confidence in themselves and their capabilities
• Greater acceptance of their unique attributes that drive success
• Expanded the usefulness and impact of their conversations with their managers
• Gained clarity on their criteria for the career options that will truly work for them
• Learned how to take ownership and responsibility for their own energy, commitment and attitude
• Discovered useful insights for moving forward in their career at Year Up

WHAT DO I (AS A MANAGER) GET FROM THIS ENDEAVOR?

As a manager, you receive the keys to unlock your employee’s potential and performance. When you know more about their Core Needs, you have the blueprint for providing an environment for them to thrive, a basis for assessing whether the employee will likely be engaged  and successful in a new/next role, and insights on what works and what does not with your employee on a day-to-day basis.

AT THE CONCLUSION OF THIS PROGRAM, WHAT IS THE RESULT?

At the conclusion of the program, participants will leave with:

  1. A clear list of the Core Needs that drive their productivity and success
  2. Ideas and a tentative game plan for their next steps in their career
  3. A strategy for maintaining their own energy and commitment even when a bad day comes around
  4. Preparation to have a conversation with you about their current role and the prospects for the evolution of their career

In addition, the employee may want to enhance or shift their Professional Development Plan (PDP) based on their new learning.

In the conversation with you, you and the employee can together map out how to help the employee be most productive and engaged.

THIS SEEMS TO BE ALL ABOUT THE EMPLOYEE, WHAT ABOUT YEAR UP'S NEEDS?

To quote “Tip” O’Neill, the former Speaker of the US House of Representative from Massachusetts, “All politics is local.” With organizations, productivity, performance and achievement of mission and objectives boils down to the contribution of individual employees.

The success of Year Up as an organization is the product of engaged employees motivated by Year Up’s mission. So Year Up’s results are based on the outcomes created through the satisfaction of each employee’s Core Needs.

Tenured managers in some organizations sometimes recoil at the idea of focused so closely on the employees needs, instead thinking “employees would be focusing on meeting their employer’s needs.” While that strategy has worked for some in the past, today’s talent gap and new business climate have caused that approach to become less effective. Retention of great employees is key and the secret to getting the best from every employee is ensuring they are engaged, satisfied and productive.

HOW DOES THIS FIT IN WITH PREDICTIVE INDEX (PI)?

Both tools help us understand what motivates a person. Think of it as looking into your home from two different windows – you are looking at the same interior from different views.

If your employee has taken the PI survey, the additional Core Needs information provided in this program helps the employee see practical examples of the behaviors articulated by PI. The employee also gains insight into how to intentionally replicate those positive behaviors day-to-day.

PI and the Core Needs work together to give the fullest picture possible for how to help you employee be successful.

MY EMPLOYEE HAS DONE THE PAPERROOM (OR RESULTS ACCELERATOR) COACHING EXPERIENCE - HOW DOES THIS FIT?

This Core Needs work is actually taken from the Results Accelerator (formerly PaperRoom) coaching experience – roughly 1/4 of the program. For individuals who have experienced the full offering, this program recaps and reinforces the learning already received. In addition, the previous experience likely did not focus specifically on the application to career situations. If it has been some time since the Results Accelerator/PaperRoom, things in life likely have changed and the update would be useful, practical and insightful.

WHAT IF I HAVE ANOTHER EMPLOYEE WHO WOULD BENEFIT?

Year Up anticipates running this same series in the future and your employee can join the program then.

ThoughtAction can also do the virtual program as a one-day on-site workshop for a group or individuals can have a personal 1:1 session with a coach delivered virtually in about 3 hours in a program called “Career Accelerator Express.” We have offered both at Year Up in the past. Contact us for the Year Up pricing. We are set up to provided these programs using PD funds.

In addition, we offer an upgrade to the Results Accelerator (formerly The PaperRoom) for an even more powerful professional development experience. Ask for details.

WHAT IF I WANT TO LEARN ABOUT MY OWN CORE NEEDS?

Attend the program yourself the next time it is offered at Year Up. Or, use your PD funds for a private coaching engagement to work with you one-on-one about your core needs, This offering is called “Career Accelerator Express” and takes about three hours to complete – delivered virtually at a conveniently scheduled time. Ask us!

In addition, we are working with Year Up about offering an intensive manager’s course about coaching employees that incorporates the Core Needs work. In that program, you also explore your Core Needs as a manager.

WHERE CAN I GET MORE SUPPORT?

Attend one of the live group coaching sessions scheduled exclusively for managers of individuals attending the Core Need Navigator program. In these drop-in sessions, bring your questions or specific situations and the lead coach will help you make it work. See the schedule on this page for details. In addition, you can contact us at coach@thoughtaction.com with your questions as well.
